The Traveling Trowel

The Trowel is currently held by

Lodge Kelso & Tweed No. 58

(Captured from Lodge St. John Jedburghn No. 104 on 4th February 2016)

One way to encourage visits around the Province would be to increase the amount of Deputations invited to other Lodges.

For those Lodges struggling to find candidates why not invite a Lodge who are lucky enough to have a queue of candidates to come as a Deputation with their candidate, work a degree and attempt to capture the Trowel =  a win/win situation for all concerned!

Lets see if we can get every Lodge in the Province to capture the Trowel at least once during the coming season.  More captures would also increase the kitty

BYSS Annual Sponsored Walk

The annual Borders Youth Support Scheme sponsored walk took place on Saturday 16th April 2016 which was ably hosted by the Hawick Lodge No. 424 BURA, it was great to see that there was a good number of Brethren taking part with most of the Lodges in the Province being represented and it was good to see that there was a number of guests (and some dogs) on the day giving their support.  The walk its self was a comfortable distance offering some great views of Hawick and the surrounding area. and although there was some change during the day the weather remained fair.  Back at the Lodge there was food amd refreshments and on conclusion the Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master Bro. John W. Blackie gave a vote of thanks to everyone who made the day such a success.  On the day, the region of 1,400 was raised with some more donations to come, it is estimated that this year we will generate approx. 1, 600 which can be put to good causes.  Next year the the walk will be organised and hosed by Lodge St. Ronan's No. 856.

Brother Gareth and his Grandson support the Borders Youth Support Scheme

Kelso & Tweed No. 58's Worshipful Senior Warden has come up with a novel way to both celebrate his wedding anniversary and raise money for the Borders Youth Support Scheme.  During his celebrations he has asked his friends and relatives not to give an Anniversary Gift but instead to bring a raffle prize and plenty of cash to buy raffle tickets.  All the donations will be raffled on the night and all half the proceeds will be donated to the BYSS.  Great Idea Gareth - well done and thanks - Oh Congratulations on your anniversary!!

In addition to this Gareth's Grandson will be running in the Kelso Civic Week 10k run on 17th July 2016, he will be accepting sponsorship and all proceeds will be given to the Borders Youth Scheme.  Anyone wishing to sponsor him should contact Gareth or anyone from Kelso & Tweed.  Another great effort - well done!

Ex Servicemen Raise 500

for Military Charities

Further to the success of the Military Degree in 2012 it was the turn of our Province to Host this year’s meeting which was on 16th August 2014 within the premises of Lodge St John Jedburgh No. 104.

The aim again was simple – to raise much needed funds for two important Military Charities.  The Mark Wright Project which provides practical support and advice to our ex-Service men and women, and their families in helping them in overcoming the invisible wounds of war, and easing their transition into civilian life and the 1st Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, also known as 1 Scots, which dates back to 1633 and is Scotland’s Oldest Regiment having a connection with Edinburgh and the Borders.  As with other regiments, 1 SCOTS has sadly had number of Soldiers seriously injured and wounded, some have not been so lucky and have tragically lost their lives while serving their country, leaving loved ones behind. Money raised for 1 SCOTS is used to support bereaved families and those recovering and convalescing.  These are certainly two worthwhile causes.

BYSS Annual Sponsored Walk Realises
Over 1, 400

Saturday 26th April 2014 saw the PGL Annual Borders Youth Support Scheme (BYSS) Sponsored Walk which was organised by Lodge St. John Stow No. 216.

It tried very hard on the day to rain but we were spared from getting wet  which was a weclome releif as the long uphill walk was challeging enough as a few aches and pains developed on the way.  The walkers headed from Stow Bowling Club up the challenging climb to Allanshaws where they were presented with some breathtaking views.

Well deserved refreshments were made available to the walkers on their return to the Bowling Club where Bro. Victor, Lord Denovan RWM and Provincial Grand Treasurer announced that over 1, 400 had been collected on the day with some more cash to come in.

This is a fantastic result, especially in these difficult economic conditions.  Many thanks to all the walkers, everyone who sponsored or made a donation, Stow Bowling Club and the team from Lodge St. John Stow No. 216 for their organisation.

Danceaid

The Lodge of Melrose St. John No. 1 supports Local Dance School to raise funds for charity.

The Michelle Douglas School of Dance was founded in 2006, providing children in Kelso and the surrounding area with fun, energetic dance classes. Popularity of the classes has increased dramatically over the past four years and now classes are branching out into other areas of the Borders including Duns, Earlston, Melrose and beyond.  This thriving business has gone from strength to strength.  Michelle has a wide range of experience and has coached all age groups, from nursery kids to high school clubs and through to adults and all abilities. Michelle has a passion for dance and aims to inspire youngsters to keep active through dance and make it accessible to as many individuals as possible.

In addition to this Michelle and her students have raised thousands of pounds for charity though dance activities and shows, the flagship performance being the annual “Dance to Fight Poverty” held in the Tait Hall in Kelso which enjoys sell out performances by her students from all over the Borders.   The dance show has become more and more popular over the years and as a result it will be held over three nights this year.  This is a professionally organised show giving the students experience of a professional show environment and the confidence to perform in front of a large crowd while at the same time raising cash for “Danceaid”, a charity which The Michelle Douglas School of Dance has been supporting for a number of years now.

Danceaid is a new and exciting charity that harnesses the energy of dance to transform the lives of vulnerable children.  The charity wants to raise the UK and beyond to its feet to help orphaned, poor, and exploited children in the developing world, and also here in the UK!

When the members of the Lodge of Melrose St. John No. 1 learned about the good work that Michelle does with youngsters in the Borders and the excellent charity work achieved they decided to offer some financial help to assist with the increasing costs of putting on a professional show and presented a cheque to the value of 250.  The 2014 Dance to Fight Poverty Performance in the Tait Hall, Kelso will be on 19, 20 & 21 June 2014 and tickets (4) will go on sale from 4th May. More information can be found at www.streetfusiondance.co.uk/mdsd.htm

The Lodge of Melrose St. John No. 1 helps Kian on his way to help others

Kian Marrian is a 17 year old pupil in his sixth year at Earlston High School studying for his Highers & Advanced Highers.

Next September Kian will be going to Malaysia for 12 months with a charity called Project Trust.  While out there Kian will be staying in a boys' home on the edge of the Bornean Rainforest.  The home is for under-privileged boys ranging from the age of 8 to 18 and there are roughly 50 to 60 boys in the home.  The boys have many issues ranging from just being educationally disadvantaged to some that have extremely serious problems at home and that is why they are now being cared for at the home.  Kian will primarily be teaching English, however, he will also be teaching the children essential life skills and other skills such as cooking, gardening and swimming etc.  Kian will also have a chance to teach them some sports and music, both of which he has a passion for.

This is an amazing opportunity for Kian and he really hopes that he will be able to make a real difference to the lives of some of these children while out there.

In order to do this Kian needs to fundraise 5, 600 before he goes, therefore, on leaning about this exciting opportunity and how less fortunate children can be helped the members of the Lodge decided to donate 200 towards Kian’s fundraising efforts.  Further information about Kian’s trip can be found in his leaflet.

Food Bank

The Lodge of Melrose St. John No. 1
donates to local  Food Bank

As the economic climate, in some cases, continues to decline it is unfortunate that more and more families are becoming more dependant to emergency food parcels.  Six Churches in Galashiels have started a Food Bank which donate emergency food parcels to families in crisis from Galashiels, Tweedbank, Gattonside and Melrose who have been referred by one of a number of professional agencies.  It was proposed that the Lodge should support the Food Bank Scheme and further to discussions with representatives from the Churches it was agreed that the Lodge gives a monthly donation to assist with the purchase of Fresh Fruit and Vegetables for the food parcels.

Another Great Whisky Night

On Saturday 18th May a group of 25 thirsty whisky lovers, including one brave lady, met in Jedburgh 104 Lodge to enjoy an evening tasting 6 cask strength malt whiskies.

Br Chris White from Kelso & Tweed 58 Lodge firstly explained the whisky distilling process, and how variations in water, peat and barley affects the final product and taste.

The first three samples were light and floral styles of whisky, after which an excellent buffet provided by Br Graeme White was greatly appreciated.  A whisky themed raffle and auction then added a huge amount to our funds.

The second set of malts were more full bodied and flavoursome, and again provoked much discussion over various individual favourites.

The evening raised a fantastic 850 for the BYSS fund.  A wonderful effort and our thanks must go to all those who supported this event, especially Br Chris White for donating such a range of quality whisky's.

1bis Support The Magaret Kerr Unit Appeal

On the 20th November 2012 Brethren from The Lodge of Melrose St. John No.1 presented a cheque for 1, 000 to Mr James Marjoribanks, Chairman of "The Difference Fundraising Appeal" as construction of the Borders First Palliative Care Unit continues.  The unit is named after a nurse whose wish it was that some day the Borders would have its own Palliative Care Provision after her Sister became termanally ill.   For more information about the appeal or to make a donation click on this link:  www.thedifference.org.uk

Bro. Kevin G. Storey, along with other members of  the Lodge presented a cheque to James Marjoribanks who thanked the Brethren very much and intimated that the appeal was overwhelmed by the support the people in the Borders have given.

Wonderful Whisky

Several Brethren were visibly drooling when they entered Jedburgh 104 on Saturday 27th October 2012, the air was full of anticipation, and more importantly the beautiful aromas of several Malt Whiskies.  A group of approx 20 dedicated followers of Scotia’s favourite tipple gathered to sample a hand picked selection of malts, giving flavours of fresh grass, through fruity and fragrant, to the full bodied smoky taste of the cask strength malts on offer.

Our expert guide for the night was Bro. Chris White of Kelso & Tweed 58, who explained the nosing and tasting of the whisky, in a style both hugely entertaining and educational.  Questions flowed as the whisky was enjoyed, with great enthusiasm from the group, which included non-masons and one brave lady!

At the interval we were grateful to Jedburgh 104 for providing catering, and at the end of the tasting, to the three young chaps who proved age is no boundary to some superb Ceilidh music, a talent I’m sure which will lead this group to more Masonic functions.

Our sincere thanks to all who supported this new event, to Bro. Chris White for donating the whisky, to Jedburgh 104 in hosting the night and to the musicians.

The result of our efforts is 500 to be shared equally between the BYSS and the Kelso & Tweed 58 OAP Xmas Party.
