Team 856 - Winners of the 2017 Bowling Tournament
from Lodge St. Ronan's No. 856 were the winners of the annual
Provincial Bowling Tournament which was hosted by Peebles Bowling Club
on Sunday 14 May 2017.
Most Lodges were represented on the afternoon and there were two Provincial Teams who all played 3 games each with 7 ends.
There was a high standard of play from all teams but the Team from Innerleithen came out on top.
The team from Galashiels (last year's winners) were the runners up and took away the Joe Lamb Memorial Shield.
The match was followed by a great meal provided by
Bowling Club. The Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master, Bro.
John W. Blackie, concluded the afternoon with a vote of thanks.
Provincial Quiz/ Fun Nights a Great Success
Provincial Quiz Night held at Lodge St James BURA No. 424 on Saturday
13th May was hailed a success, there were a good number of teams
participated on the night taking up the challenge to answer the quiz
masters (Bro. Drew Forsyth, WSPGM) questions (which felt like they were
provided by Mensa). The teams were able to boost their points by
taking part in activities which proved to be both challenging and
entertaining. It was the Provincial Grand Masters team who came
up on top, their two young stars earning most of the points of the
evening. There was also a raffle and the proceedings from this
and the entry fee eared over £400 which will be donated to Prostate
Thanks to Everyone who helped make this night a success!!

George Donnelly of the Haughfoot Lodge No. 1824 presents a cheque from
the Borders Youth Support Scheme to Caitlyn Gillie who is raising funds
to go to Bolivia with the Borders Exploration Group to help Street
Children and to work on other projects.
Annual BYSS Sponsored Walk Raises £1, 800
15th April 2017 saw the PGL Borders Youth Support Scheme Annual
Sponsored Walk which was hosted by Lodge St. Ronan's No. 856. The
route took the walkers along the side of the River Tweed to Cardrona
and back again where there were well deserved refreshments provided by
the Lodge. £1, 600 was collected on the day with at least another
£200 to follow.
On conclusion the Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master, Bro. John W. Blackie, thanked all the participants and
all the sponsors and concluded by thanking No. 856 for hosting the walk.
Next year the walk will be organised by The Haughfoot Lodge No. 1824.

Bobby Heaney, Past Master of Lodge St. Ronan's No. 856 (Left) along

Grand Lodge Border Youth Support Scheme to Peebles High School Head Teacher
Campbell Wilson along with Depute Head Teacher Jeremy Lee. The grant is to aid
their Opportunities Pot which is used to help assist pupils who would otherwise
miss out on trips etc.

Saturday 18th February saw the Installation of the
Provincial Grand Lodge Elected Office-bearers.

Bro. Michael Peutrill, installed the elected Office-bearers and the Worshipful Substitute Provincial Grand Master,
Bro. Andrew Forsyth invested the Lodge Stewards.
Afterwards, the Hawick Lodge No. 111 hosted a fine meal which was followed by a Toast List.
The Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master concluded by thanking everyone for their kind support.
Mark Tokens and Jewels Auctioned
Gary Duff, the Provincial Grand Junior Deacon, from the
Galashiels Lodge No. 262 auctioned off a complete set
of Masonic Mark Tokens via a silent auction which bids closed on 18
February during our Provincial Grand Lodge Installation.
This was in aid of the Border Youth Support Scheme.
Also included in the collection of tokens were 2
jewels, Lodge Peebles Kilwinning No. 24 300th anniversary jewel and The
Galashiels Lodge No. 262 200th anniversary jewel both celebrated in October 2016.
Auction realised the sum of £213 which was the highest bid, bids came
from all across the Province as well as outwith the Province including
Ireland and Canada. Well done and thanks to everyone who

Bro. Norman - 50 Years in the Craft
Monday 6th February 2017 Bro. Norman Donald, Past Master of Lodge St.
Ronan's No. 856 celebrated being a member of the craft for 50 years.
Bro. Norman was initiated on 6th February 1967 and was Master of the Lodge on 2000 - 2001.
a well-respected member of the Craft Norman holds Honorary Grand Rank
and has been our Provincial Grand Chaplain for 17 years.
the evening Bro. Norman stood in as the First Degree Candidate to
remind him of those very first steps he took 50 years ago supported on
this occasion by his two sons who are Office-bearers in the Lodge.

BYSS Helping to Make Music
The Borders Youth Support Scheme has given financial support to the Scottish
Borders Youth Brass Band who have been raising funds to enable them to compete
in the European Brass Band Contest in Ostend, Belgium in April 2017

No. 58 Annual Ball was held in the newly refurbished premises of
Kelso Rugby Football Club on Friday 18th November 2016. The
music was provided this year by Western Rhythm. A great time was had by
all who attended.

Monday 31 October 2016 saw Victor Lord Denovan's last meeting as the Right Worhsipful Master of
St. John Stow No. 216 who were the hosts of this year's Reigning
Masters Degree. A Second Degree was worked by Bro. Victor Lord
Denovan, RWM & SE Corner (RWM 216), Bro. Joe Kirkpatrick, WSW &
Tools (RWM 24) Bro. Mike Peutrill, WJW & Tracing Board (RWM
424), Bro. Marshall Muirhead, SD (RWM 58), Bro. John Howie, JD
& Obligation (RWM 856) and a guest from Rosslyn St. Clair No.
606, Bro. Raymond Mills who stood in as Inner Guard and
delivered the Secrets. The Charge was delivered by Bro. James

Saturday 22 October 2016 a Deputation from the Provincial Grand Lodge
of Roxburgh, Peebles and Selkirk Shires headed by the Right Worshipful
Provincial Grand Master, Bro. John W. Blackie and a Deputation from the
Grand Lodge of Scotland, Headed by the Most Worshipful Grand Master
Mason, Bro. Charles Iain Robert Wolrige Gordon of Esslemont entered the
Lodge of Peebles Kilwinning No. 24 to be a part of the Lodge's
Tercentenary Celebrations. A Ceremony of Rededication was carried
out by the Office-bearers of Grand Lodge, afterwards the Brethren
marched in procession along Peebles High Street. There was a fine meal to follow in the Green Tree Hotel and the evening ended with speeches and toasts.

Kilwinning No. 24 on 22 October 2016. It is Brother Jim Robb from
Lodge Peebles No. 24 and Bro. Adam Kelly, Past Master of Lodge St.
John Stow No. 216. It is thought that these are two
surviving Masons in the Province who fought overseas in WWII.
Bro. Jim was in the Far East fighting against the Japanese and
Bro. Adam was in the Middle East, Africa. This great photo of
these two heroes was taken by Bro. Andy Beat PM of the Galashiels Lodge

On Saturday 1 October 2016 a Deputation from the Grand Lodge of Scotland, headed by the
Depute Grand Master Mason, Bro. Ramsay McGhee MCMI, visited the Galshiels Lodge No. 262 to celebrate the
Lodge's 200th Anniversary. A Ceremony of Rededication was professionally
performed by the Grand Lodge Office-bearers.
1bis Meets the Melrosian
On the morning
of Saturday 25 June 2016 members of the Lodge along with visitors and the RWPGM
met Struan Huchison, the 2016 Melrosian at the site of the Original Lodge at
St. Johns Wynd, Newstead as part of the Traditional Tour of Ceremonies to mark
the end of the week long Melrose Festival. A brief ceremony took place and
thereafter, the RWM, Bro James Thom, presented the Melrosian with a print of
the Old Lodge.
On Sunday 3rd July 2016 Lodge St. James BURA No. 424 were involved with the unveiling of the stone at Wellogate Cemetery to mark the grave of Brother Thomas
Caldwell PM, author to the words to "Up Wi Auld Hawick" and "Oor Ain Auld Toon".

The Hawick Archeological Society and Mrs Ida Cairns (nee Caldwell).
BYSS Supports Kelso Football Club's Juniors
On 23 April 2016 a cheque for £200 was presented to Stuart
Cessford of Kelso Football Club to help with the
cost of kit for their
juniors. The Club has several children's and youth teams from 8 to 17 years playing in the
Scottish Border Junior Football Association League and their kit continually
needs maintained and updated.

BYSS Annual Sponsored Walk
annual Borders Youth Support Scheme sponsored walk took place on
Saturday 16th April 2016 which was ably hosted by the Hawick Lodge No.
424 BURA, it was great to see that there was a good number of Brethren
taking part with most of the Lodges in the Province being represented
and it was good to see that there was a number of guests (and some
dogs) on the day giving their support. The walk its self was a
comfortable distance offering some great views of Hawick and the
surrounding area. and although there was some change during the day the
weather remained fair. Back at the Lodge there was food amd
refreshments and on conclusion the Right Worshipful Provincial Grand
Master Bro. John W. Blackie gave a vote of thanks to everyone who made
the day such a success. On the day, the region of £1,400 was
raised with some more donations to come, it is estimated that this
year we will generate approx. £1, 600 which can be put to good causes.
Next year the the walk will be organised and hosed by Lodge St.
Ronan's No. 856.
Brother Gareth and his Grandson support the Borders Youth Support Scheme
& Tweed No. 58's Worshipful Senior Warden has come up with a novel
way to both celebrate his wedding anniversary and raise money for the
Borders Youth Support Scheme. During his celebrations he has
asked his friends and relatives not to give an Anniversary Gift but
instead to bring a raffle prize and plenty of cash to buy raffle
tickets. All the donations will be raffled on the night and all
half the proceeds will be donated to the BYSS. Great Idea Gareth
- well done and thanks - Oh Congratulations on your anniversary!!
addition to this Gareth's Grandson will be running in the Kelso Civic
Week 10k run on 17th July 2016, he will be accepting sponsorship and
all proceeds will be given to the Borders Youth Scheme. Anyone
wishing to sponsor him should contact Gareth or anyone from Kelso &

At the Regular Meeting of The Galashiels Lodge No.262 on Monday 11th April 2016 the Right
Worshipful Provincial Grand Master, Bro. John W. Blackie had the pleasure and
privilege of presenting Brother Barclay Scott with his 70 Year Diploma. Brother
Scott was for many years a regular attender at the Lodge, unfortunately he has
recently suffered from poor health and has been unable to get to meetings, so
it was a pleasure to welcome him back into the Lodge again.
70 Year Diploma
The Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master stated that he
was indeed honoured to be invited to assist in the presentation, and was very
pleased to have been present at such an auspicious occasion. He thanked Bro.
Scott for all the support he had given the Galashiels Lodge No. 262,and congratulated him on his tremendous
achievement of attaining his platinum certificate for seventy years service.
